wackojackouk Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) Hi guys First of all thanks to all of you for your help and advice since I've owned the Galaxy since November (especially Gregers for putting up with me :P) To cut a long story short I think I bought a lemon but the garage even tho 120 miles away sorted out the probs with the air conditioning, mirrors etc etc AND up untill now fixed the auxiliary heater but since the weekend I've been getting the excessive smoke again and need some advice before I go back to the dealer. I got the Galaxy back on the 7th December so just over two months ago and they told me that they fixed the booster. Quote "Smoking Auxillary Heater sorted new glow plugs and motor" However as stated above I'm now getting smoke after driving for about 5/10 minutes when stopped at lights. I pulled over on Saturday and could see it flowing out of the mini exhaust pipe. However 20 mins later nothing. I have however noticed that on a couple of occasions when temp under 5 degrees the motor is NOT coming on anymore when I believe it shoudl do (and has been recently due to the weather). Tonight just whizzed out to Tesco and thought I could hear the motor. Parked up and smoke galore but I could hear the motor running. So could someone tell me - if it's smoking is the motor working (I'm sure I can hear it) and if so what's generally wrong or what's causing the smoke - in layman's terms please.....:P I do have an additional warranty with Warranty2000 but it covers nothing to be honest and is pretty worthless - just wanted some more info or advice what to tell the dealer later in the week and pretty much PRAY he will do something. My thinking is along the lines of the parts he replaced (which I can say have failed) should surely have some sort of guarantee on them - shouldn't they? Thanks for reading WJUK ps - Other thing I just thought of that I remember - I heard a ticking noise coming from the bottom glove box area the other day when the booster heater was on. I had this when I first got the car but can't remember if it was prior to the original fix or not. Maybe something related? Edited February 17, 2010 by wackojackouk Quote
galaxymad Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Hi there WJUK I have myself have a mk2 Galaxy 19 tdi and work in a ford Bodyshop and have come across a few problems one being the auxiliary heater Quote
gregers Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 wacko B) as i said before m8 if you cannot hear the run on pump, lift bonnet locate said item and feel to see if its working,if not then the booster will spool up/down,as it will only heat the portion of coolant within the booster itself(coolant isnt being pumped round)then it will get to temperature and then shut down, the fix with very clear instructions on how to fix your pump can be found in the faqs.have you read the war and peace thread on booster heaters?if not set aside a few hours m8,much info within that thread.from what ive read if a new plug is fitted then you will get lots of smoke until all the old crud has been burnt/cleaned off,i get no smoke from mine and that was a new unit fitted about 3 years back. GM,welome to the forum do you get a GOOD DISCOUNT ?? ;) :P Quote

GM,welome to the forum do you get a GOOD DISCOUNT ?? :( :D Hi guys Got myself a vag com lead and connected it up tonight. Really expected it not to work but hey presto it did. Did a scan but it kept bombing out at Module 3 saying it was a shareware version etc..... Anyway went into Module 18 and ran it. Came back with 5 things and I remember one being flame out so cleared codes. Shut down the program and turned car on and off and sat for a minute or so. Couldnt hear much so thought oh well never mind but turned car off and I heard the aux heater :D It did sound a bit louder than usual as in like an exhaust or if it was clearing some stuff out but sounded normal after about 20 seconds and then checked again and no fault codes reappearing.... so a bit happier now. Will keep eye on it but wonder why it got the repeated flame out if technically the motor and glow plugs were replaced. Cheers WJUK Quote
gregers Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 and did you hear the run on pump working? Quote
wackojackouk Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 and did you hear the run on pump working? Not sure to be honest. What does it sound like. I know where you guys said it was but there is all the sound proofing there on my gal so not easy to see get it. Quote
gregers Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 you should be able to hear it for a few minutes after turning the engine off.or undo bonnet locate the pump and give it a feel(ooo errrr)you should then feel it humming. anyway hopefully fingers crossed youve got it sorted. Quote

Sorry if this sounds daft but I do hear a noise where the aux heater (roughly) but I thought that was the aux heater itself - like a whirring or jet (ish) noise. Quote
gregers Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 thr run on pump can be heard from inside the car when the engine is turned off,its a humming noise,it pumps the coolant round the system to stop hot spots. Quote

Like a short humming. Almost sounds like its sucking water (thats not really a good description tho). Don't think I can hear it constantly tho Quote

Turn the ignition on, wait 20 seconds then turn it off and remove the key - if you can't hear a constant humming noise its dead, they seem to fail between 60 and 80K, mines almost failed as the hum is alternating in frequency now. Ok will try tomorrow now. Should I turn off the air con/heater etc or does this need to be on to get the run on pump (sorry if thats a daft question). Mine's done 53k so far but it could be that. Would it show up on vag.com as an error? Also is it a simple replacement and how much? (not sure about replacing the bushes thing tho) Quote
gregers Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 iirc you wont get much change out of 200 quid if its dead,BUT this forum has a fix for it :( :D found in the faqs, run on pump.detailed instructions on how to mend it. Quote

They won't have an effect on the pump so it'll make listening easier if you find somewhere quiet and turn everything off. Whilst you can hear it in the cabin, it'll me clearer to open the bonnet and listen there instead. There are no error codes when it fails, you might possibly get aux heater over temp ones but nothing directly related to the pump. Replacement is reasonably easy, about Quote
robpol Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Think my Aux pump is dead too......grrrhhhh.. :( Quote
